E-book The Brave Monkey Pirate

Title- The Brave Monkey Pirate

Author-Hayes Roberts

Illustrator- Hayes Roberts

Year-2009

Genre- E-book

Publisher- Orchard Books

The Brave Monkey Pirate, was a cute e-book with plenty of adventure.  The illustration could have been better, with more vibrant colors.  I thought  long hard a trying to figure out what category would this story go under. The genre I came up with is, fable because the moral of the story was to face your fears head on. The  main character in the story was Mobi ( the young monkey). The problem or conflict is the young monkey was afraid of shots and  it was a very important shot to protect him from  scurvy.
I would us this book during story time and also independently reading. Students that are at the computer are able to view this e-books. It would be cool if we had kindle so students are able to utilize the e-books, or if they would like to upload certain books that we have or they have. I like using  the Kindles, Tables and iPad in the classroom. The student seem to really enjoy it as well.
My nephews has this Leap Pad that reads to him and you can use the pen or wand. You put the pointer on the work and it pronounces the word.   Wish is cool for no so strong readers, they can hear the word sounds. Technology and reading has advance in my opinion for the best.  Reading programs like Millie's Playhouse, Author and Whinny The pooh are great learning programs for students and they are having fun while learning.

  1. E-book- The Brave Monkey Pirate

I just finished reading the story The Brave Monkey Pirate by Hayes Roberts. I loved the illustrations in the story because it looks easy enough for me to draw. The characters in the story were really cute and innocent looking. The young pirate named Modi was supposed to get a shot to be immune to scurvy and some other stuff, as the story says. Modi didn’t like shots. His father came home and wanted to help him of his fears. He gave him a map and told him to find the destination that he wanted him to find. Modi’s father also said that he would give Modi ice cream if he didn’t move during the shot. Modi went on his expedition and he arrived in a snowy area. He found a crab on a throne; this crab gave him a magic rock that would teleport him into the future and that he would still get his ice cream.
At first I thought the end was stupid and the story was short and pointless, but I see now that there are good qualities about this story. One thing I am thinking of faith. Modi had faith that he would be helped in his situation. He didn’t see the promise of the ice cream right away and he didn’t know he was going to get out of that shot without moving around, but he believed that if he was obedient to his task at hand, then he would reap good benefits from it, and he did. He got his promise at the end of the story from his Dad and from the crab. I also like how hard the young lad worked throughout the story. After he left his home and went on his map adventure, he had to dodge monsters, climb lava infested mountains, sail across the waters, and go into snowy areas. He really wanted to succeed and he was willing to go through many dangerous places to get to the prize. This is inspiring to me and helps me to keep moving forward. This book is an easy read and I would read this story to Kindergarten students, or even younger than that.

  2. I really enjoyed this e-book. I actually read it to my son and he understood the concept at the age of three. The moral of the story was a to face your fears but also people have fears that you may not think is fearful. Modi went through the wildest seas, climbed up a lava mountain, and sneaked past some dangerous creatures. Modi all along was a brave monkey. A lot of students in the first and second grade fear needles because they do hurt, so I would use this as a read aloud. Some teachers I know have books they read to their class about health and I would incorporate this book in a health class, so they can understand the reasons why shots are given. I thought that the illustrations could have been more detail because it does look like somebody can draw that with their eyes close. But the great thing about the illustrations, is that they represent exactly what the words are saying. If you were to just look at the pictures you could make your own story. If I had to plan a lesson, I would have the words covered up and have the students explain what they think the story is about before we read. Overall, it has a realistic lesson to it because when we use to go to the doctors or dentist, we all feel scare but in the end we end up getting a treat for being courageous. This is a wonderful easy to read book for students to engage into and have mini discussions on the similar experiences they had like Modi. I would also, encourage parents to download books similar to The Brave Monkey Pirate for beginner readers because the concept is easy to comprehend.

  3. I personally would like to say that I wish I had this book when I was going to the doctors when I was little. This was the cutest book ever, I think children with the fear of going to the doctors would enjoy a book like this. It's a simple read and by April saying that her son understood I think it would be great for kids around that age. Now the only thing I didn't like about the book were the illustrations. I think there could have been a little more to it. For all the adventure and excitement in the book I thought it needed some more colors. Bright colors that jump out at you and give you the sense of fear and relief when the shot was over with. Now April made a good point saying that she would incorporate this book in her health class. I think that's perfect way to introduce the topic of going to the doctors. Usually when kids go to the doctors they already know they're going to have to get a shot. This is a book that could calm them down a little and to insure them that everything is going to be okay. They could even bring the book to the doctors with them and have everything go along with the story.

  4. I thought that this was a good book. the only thing that I did not like about it were the colors. there could have been more to it. I would put this in my classroom because a lot of the children can relate to it. Every body goes to the doctors. I would not have though about it but April made a good point by saying that she would incorporate this book in her health class due to it being about going to the doctors and getting a needle .This book would give the children a sense of security because they now know that they will be okay.
