The Cat in the Hat
By. Dr. Seuss
The cat in the hat is one of my favorite books, the story starts off with two children sitting in house due to rainy weather. Their mother left the children in the house while she is out. Suddenly a cat in the hat comes in and introduces himself. The fish tells the children that the cat should not be in the house while the children mother is gone. The children are bored and want to play, intrigued by the cat they children let the cat in the hat stay. The cat in the hat shows the children a juggling trick, the cat stands on a ball and begins to juggle ;a cake, books, milk, fans and the fish in the bowl. The cat loses his footing and slips and falls and everything that he was juggles falls to the ground. The cat has many tricks he brings a big red box in the house. The fish opposed the idea but the children want to know what is the box. They allow the cat to show them more fun tricks, he introduces Thing 1 and Thing 2. These things game are very messy and they destroy the house. The children allowed the cat in the hat and Things 1 and 2 to destroy the house. The fish announced that the children mother is coming and they need to clean up before she comes in and sees the house in a disarray. The boy shouts enough ,enough, cat in the hat you have to go before my mom comes and sees this mess. The cat in the hat come in the house with a cleaning machine and cleans the whole house and packs up thing 1 and 2 and tips his hat and disappears. The children's mother comes home, asked the children what they did while she was gone.Their response was ohhh nothing.
This story is about morals, the children knew that were not suppose to have company while their mother was gone. The children allowed the cat in the hat to come in and destroy their home and they lied to their when she asked what they had done. But in their defense if they would have told their mother what they really did she probably wouldn't believe them. The cat in the hat is classic and this is a book that I will have in my class library .
A banned book is one that has been removed from the shelves of libraries, bookstores, or classrooms because of its controversial content. In some cases, banned books of the past have been burned and/or refused publication. Dr. Seuss books are well-known to be in this category because parents believe this book is teaching their child to be mischievous and clever.
ReplyDeleteMs. Brown,
I really enjoyed this fantasy genre book. The children in the book were very bored and was in need of some serious entertainment. The Cat was definitely an eye catcher to the children because he was doing things that were impossible for real people to do. The children were home by themselves which I never understood because that could have been considered child abandonment, back in the day. The children did let the Cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 destroy their house when they weren't suppose to allow company over while their mother wasn't home. I did like the fact that the Fish was the "look out" character because he didn't want the kids to get in trouble by their mother. Overall, I can see how this book could be banned because it teaches children to disobey rules and lie. Even though, they didn't get in trouble they lied to their mother which is not acceptable under any circumstance.
When I was younger I wasn't really a fan of Dr. Seuss books but I did read them if I wanted to. I was shocked when I found out that The Cat in The Hat was a banned book. I thought the book was appropriate and that kids would have a good time reading the book.
ReplyDeleteCat in The Hat was about a brother and sister that were left at home and didn't have anything to do because it was raining outside. Out of nowhere a cat appeared and started showing the kids different tricks. Now the kids have a talking fish and the fish tries to tell them this isn't a good idea and that the cat should leave right away. Well the cat didn't leave and the house got destroyed from all the tricks and games the cat decided to play. Now they have this big mess they need to clean up before their mother gets home. Thing 1 and 2 appear and help everyone clean up the house. The house is back in order before the mom gets home and it looked liked nothing happened at all.
Some say that this book should be banned because it's teaching children how to disobey their parents and how to sneaky. I personally think that saying that the book can teach young children this was a little extreme. Children are sneaky and don't listen to their parents all the time. The book didn't teach them this that's just apart of growing up and being a kid. Especially if your parents aren't home of course your going to do all the things they tell you not to do when they are there. Another reason why people said this book should be banned because it shows bad parenting skills. Since the mom left the children home alone she appeared to be an unfit mother. That's not the case at all, it wasn't like the children were infants or toddlers. They knew how to take care of themselves and do what they were supposed to do. Kids should be able to live a little sometimes.
I think The Cat in The Hat is a good book and it opens children s minds up to imagination. Instead of being in the house bored because it's raining you can find something fun to do to let the time go by fast. If you have something that's keeping your attention and your having fun while doing it, you won't complain and say there is nothing to do.

DeleteGrowing up the cat in the hat by Dr. Seuss was one of my favorite books. I completely agree that is book teaches children about morals. The children knew that their mom trusted them to stay home while she went out and told them not to let anybody in but instead they disobeyed her. They let the cat in because they wanted to have fun and in the end did not think twice about what their mom told them. They only thought about theirselves. I really don't understand why this book is a banned book because it teaches children about everyday life lessons such as decisions. The children had two choices The first choice was to not let the cat in, be bored, not mess the house up, and not get in trouble. But instead they chose to go with the second option letting the cat in the house destroying things only to get in trouble by their mom. I also agree that if they would have told their mom what really happened she would not have believed them. This book would be a book that I would have in my classroom.
